About SZDO

What is a Docent?
Docents are permanent trained volunteers who assist the zoo with tours, classes, animal watches, animal ambassador programs, special events, and much more. As a Docent you are able to choose which activities and times you would like to participate.

What do docents do at Sunset Zoo?
Docents are required to volunteer a minimum of 40 hours of service to Sunset Zoo each year and attend a minimum of six monthly meetings after the training program is complete.

This program is great for anyone who has a sincere interest in animals and conservation. It will allow you to give back to the community while learning how to inspire conservation of the natural world. Once you have successfully completed training class, you may continue as a docent as long as you complete the minimum service hours.

What's this about training?
During training you will learn about zoo history, animal diets, individual animals at the zoo and much more.  All orientations will start at the zoo's Education Building. You may register for the training program at the end of each orientation.

How much does this cost?
Training costs $35.00 which includes a volunteer manual with animal descriptions and information.
